I haven’t written fiction yet (except for my input to my manager for my annual job appraisal), but I’ve often thought if I did, I’d hijack my friends & acquaintances for characters. Just not sure I know enough about sufficient people to properly supply a story.

10-23-11 Wanting to make the pattern ‘Creme Brulee’ in the Summer 2009 Issue of Quilts and More magazine. The pattern I’m after has incorporated rail fence pattern with small half square triangles at the end of the last log in the block forming a pinwheel when 4 blocks are set together. Hi Sharon.

This is actually much less plotting than I did for my (still unfinished) historical novel. For that one I drew out each characters story arc/emotional arc, wrote specific scenes to ‘do’ specific things, and researched like crazy (because I really enjoy that part of the process). Everyone plots differently, but having some kind of structure to follow really does help. I’ve read many articles and books on it and each one has something that feels right to me, so I sort of pick and choose from among all the various techniques.

The sort of writing you mention – just picking up a pen and going for it – is called pantsing, as in “writing by the seat of your pants”. There are thousands of forum posts on NaNoWriMo’s site discussing the pros and cons of plotting vs. pantsing. This year I’m half way in between, I think – minimal plotting and leaving a lot to chance just to see what happens.

If you want to write, why not do NaNoWriMo this year? It’s free and you still have a week to plan!

In my naiveté I hadn’t realized all this structure was necessary. I thought one sat done, took a pen in hand, and let the creatures come to life—I guess you can tell I haven’t written any fiction. I’d like to, though, so this is very helpful indeed.

Lovely story, reminding me of the time I went horseback riding. The horse had a mind of its own and left the others to amble down a hill to a creek for a drink. An inexperienced rider tilting forward like that tends to slide off, and I did. But I was a limber teenager who just jumped back on, and all was well on my first and last ride on a horse.

(Yeah, and that little horse-watering creek was about the size of Big Thompson River. I agree with you!)
